By now most of us have heard of the obscenely lavish wedding of politician G Janardhana Reddy’s daughter Brahmani with Rajeev Reddy; about the 1.7 crore wedding saree, 50,000 wedding guests and performances by film stars and so on. In the current scenario, where the demonetisation has effectively rendered the common man cashless; the displays have been in particularly poor taste. But this is hardly the first time we’ve seen such extravagance in an Indian wedding.
The bride's diamond necklace was 25 crores and in addition there was antique jewelry worth 150, crores that is. The venue was the Bangalore Palace and it is estimated that the per plate cost of the wedding feast would have been about Rs 3000 and there were 50,000 guests… do the math.

Sahara chief Subrata Roy's sons, Sushanto with Richa and Seemanto with Chandini is another that falls into the obscene display of wealth category. The double wedding held in Lucknow in 2004 was supposed to have cost Rs 552 crores. The feast featured 101 world cuisines with the likes of Amitabh Bachchan, Anil Ambani welcoming other guests!
The wedding of the son of politician Kanwar Singh Tanwar with the daughter of another politician, Sukhbir Singh Jaunapuria cost the two families about 250 crores. Guests received gifts of 30 gm silver biscuits, cash and more; the gift for the groom from his in laws was a Bell 429 helicopter!
The marriage of UK based steel tycoon Laxmi Mittal grabbed international headlines. The 6 day extravaganza featured royalty, international celebs and castles and more. The wedding cost over 500 crores and featured top designers, choreographers, makeup artistes and even a play penned by Javed Akhtar. Several years later, the marriage ended in divorce unfortunately.
American hotelier Vikram Chatwal met and married model and investment banker Priya some years back. This cost around Rs 100 crores and guests were flown in for the festivities by private jets. Bollywood royalty as well as European royalty were in attendance. Unfortunately this wedding also ended in divorce a few years later.
