Ranveer Singh is touted as one of the most talented actors of his generation; a sort of Govinda on steroids… with abs. Similarly glowing tributes are paid to the highly talented Alia Bhatt. The two come together in Gully Boy, a highly promising looking film about Mumbai’s underground rap scene. The official trailer of Gully Boy released on 10th January and audiences now look forward to the movie release on 14th February, 2019.
It seems to have all the ingredients of a highly watchable film: the story of an underdog who wants to make something out of his lower middle class life which includes an abusive father. The romance track between Ranveer Singh’s character and Alia Bhatt, who seems to play a Muslim girl training to be a doctor should be very interesting to watch. The film has a gritty, realistic feel about it; very different from the usual formulaic Bollywood offering. Zoya Akhtar’s direction and producers Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani are more reasons to look forward to Gully Boy.
The movie is reportedly based on the lives of Divine and Naezy (Naved Shaikh); who are hugely popular in India and abroad.
Audiences and celebrities all seem to have positive, appreciative reactions to the trailer.
The trailer is trending at #1 on YouTube with well over 14 million views in less than 24 hours. The #GullyBoy trailer also started to trend on Twitter shortly after release.
The audiences are looking forward to a new story, well told, as well as what promises to be some brilliant performances from the leads and the supporting cast.
Singh is clearly one of the main draws of the film. His complete commitment to any role he does, his versatility, his ability to completely alter his look and constantly reinvent himself are quite without parallel. His incredible energy fairly leaps out at us from the screen.
Several tweets have pointed out the similarities between the look and content of this film and other film about another rapper. We shall know more, come 14th February.
The #ApnaTimeAayega phrase sticks in the head after you finish watching the trailer. It seems set to become slogan of its time; in much the same way as ‘aal ijj well’ became one soon after 3 Idiots.
Whether it is the aspiring, struggling artiste or just someone trying to hail a cab in Mumbai, #ApnaTimeAayega promises to become an anthem, a rallying cry of sorts.
Yo Yo Honey Singh may be India’s best known rapper but certainly isn’t known for his originality or the profundity of his lyrics.
If there is a Twitter trend, can a meme fest be far behind! After the huge success of the Gully Boy trailer, all eyes are trained on 14th February when the movie releases in theatres.
