James Bond is a phenomenon, no mistake. Some of us may question the very need for James Bond movies to exist, but there is no doubt that there is a huge demand for this brand of movie: with the gadgets and the guy who always gets the girl. Here is what we know so far about the next Bond movie, slated for release in October 2019.
The first Bond was Sean Connery and the film was Dr No (1062). More than half a century later, we shall have the 25th edition of this series of spy films.
Director of the iconic Trainspotting, Oscar winning films such as Slumdog Millionaire as well as hugely acclaimed films such as 127 Hours, Danny Boyle is to direct the next Bond film. It is thought that the Boyle, who is seen as something of a radical, will bring some amount of experimentation into a tried and tested formula; taking people outside their comfort zone.
Boyle and Craig wave worked together before in the sort film where Bond accompanies The Queen to the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games. It should be interesting to see what synergy the two create for the big screen.
You have to give it to the Brits – trust them marry tradition with modernity! Here an actor playing a fictitious character actually escorts the real queen of England to the stadium by helicopter while giving us a bit of a tour of the city.
There was a time when they said there would be a black Bond and that that the gorgeous Idris Elba would essay role of the suave spy. There was even speculation that Bond would be a woman. But, after all it will be the granite faced Daniel Craig who will play the role yet again.
Daniel Craig is no spring chicken. He celebrated his 50th year this March and in something of an aging-Bollywood-hero-trying-to-pull-off-the-young-guy type move, he is the play Bond this time around as well. This makes it the 5th time he will play Bond (after Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, Skyfall and Spectre) and many feel it is one too many times! Only Sean Connery and Roger Moore have done it more times.
Craig’s portrayal of Bond is hugely popular. The flinty gaze, and the almost elegant brutality he portray on screen has many fans to be sure. Then of course there are those (like me) who feel that Craig is just too humourless whereas Bond needs to have some of that élan, that charming savoir faire.
There are those who feel that other actors would make better Bonds, such as Superman! Henry Cavill who has played superman in recent superhero films was one of the names bandied about to replace Craig as Bond. He had also expressed his willingness to do so.
