The posters of Tanhaji starring Ajay Devgn and Saif Ali Khan released a few days back. Now the Tanhaji – The Unsung Warrior trailer has dropped and predictably, the period film about Maratha valour quickly started to trend on social media. Also predictably, the trailer of Tanhaji received many reactions and inspired lots of memes. Check out both
The movie stars Ajay Devgn, Saif Ali K, Sharad Kelkar and Kajol. The movie is the dramatised version of the battle of Sinhagadh (earlier known as Kondhana) between the Marathas and the Mughals.
People had been waiting for the trailer to drop and it released at precisely 1.47 pm on Tuesday, 19 November. Speculation was rife that the timing may have had to do with numerology and other superstition that is common in Bollywood (the change of spelling from Devgan to Devgn being a case in point).
Lead actor Devgn tweeted this to announce the trailer; presenting the story as a ‘surgical strike’ upon the Mughal Empire.
They loved the heroic persona of the protagonists, the VFX, action and scale of the film.
In particular the trailer came in for special mention from Salman Khan who wished Devgn all the best.
Many expressed the view that Saif Ali Khan who plays Udaybhan in the film, is an underrated actor and deserves more recognition
Were less impressed.
Many on Twitter pointed out and questioned the recent Bollywood trend that seeks to demonise certain rulers of India’s history and to present certain rulers as saviours.
The trailer mentions the protection of Brahmins in particular. According to this commentator, Shivaji Maharaj was the protector of all people, and he claims that such movie content smacks of pro-Brahmin propaganda.
This image of a happy Tanhaji being embraced by Shivaji caught the fancy of the tweeple.
This twitter user was reminded of the feeling of arriving early in office.
This commentator tweeted using a picture from an older film featuring the two actors.
Many found this scene relatable – with this commentator speaking about being dumped.
This reaction is also applicable to other situations.
This commentator feels that Devgn is plugging a brand that he has endorsed for years with this dance step.
This scene also inspired memes
This commentator seems to be pointing out the fact that historically, the name of Shivaji’s military commander has been spelled as ‘Tanaji’ and that ‘tanha’ means secluded or lonely.
This too! Meanwhile fans are wondering if there will be another Tanhaji trailer or song released before the release of the film on 10 January 2020.
