After they went and killed off half of humanity in the last edition of the Avengers’ franchise, audiences were on absolute tenterhooks for any clue about what will happen next. Marvel Studios kept even the movie name a closely guarded secret. So when the trailer dropped on 7 December, we got a few hints about what to expect from Avengers: Endgame.
The trailer opens with Ironman (Robert Downey Jr.) stuck alone in space. Running out of oxygen he seems to be recording his final words. We are reminded of all that was lost in the last edition: friends, families and more. We get glimpses of Thor, Bruce Banner (Hulk), Hawkeye. We see Captain America (Chris Evans) having a somber chat with Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson). It’s a pretty grim trailer, the only bright spark being the unexpected appearance of Ant Man (Paul Rudd) in the end.
The trailer is grim and basically everyone is depressed - the superheroes and the viewers. That is the trailer in a nutshell.
Marvel has its audiences figured out. It treats its audiences with contempt – and audiences are still around, panting for more! How else does one explain the fact that they decimated some of the most beloved superheroes in the last film and people still loved the damned movie!
Someone had this technical observation to make. After all one's the predator and the other its prey!
The clues about the names were there. All those people who watch, re-watch, analyse and dissect the trailers, movies and all of Marvel's promotional material had a fair idea what the name of the movie could be.
Marvel did what they are famous for doing: throwing fans a few scraps, dropping a few hints but leaving them hanging; always wanting more.
These and many more! Marvel has figured out that audiences are slightly masochistic. They enjoy being scared and made to feel helpless and anxious.
The trailer barely tells us anything about anyone. There are plenty of characters we know precisely nothing about!
Marvel fans with all their emotional investment in these characters are feeling quite emotionally wrung out with the new trailer. Non-Marvel fans? Not so much.
Many fans are desolate that we will see the last of some of the biggest characters of the franchise. Captain America for instance, already announced his exit.
This is Marvel having yet more fun at the expense of their audience: the whole MARVEL STUDIOS logos dissipates here; much like everyone died in Avengers Infinity War.
That is Marvel makes us all do: pay for the pain they cause us! So come April 2019, we can certainly expect some more pain, when Avengers Endgame releases. Meanwhile fans are hoping for another trailer… or not… Marvel hasn’t finished toying with us just yet.
