Remember that record breaking Instagram egg which broke Kylie Jenner’s record and prompted a funny video response from Diljit Dosanjh? Well it turns out the egg wasn’t just an egg! It cracked open and instead of making an omlette, it sent out a welcome message about mental health awareness, which everyone appreciated.
The Egg Gang, who claim to be world record holders created this little video about the egg cracking open due to pressure. The cracked egg sends out the message to all of those who are struggling: talk to someone.
The nonprofit Mental Health America tweeted its gratitude and support to the message. It is a fact that mental illnesses are still shrouded in secrecy and most people are still reluctant to ask for help.
There is a lot of utterly frivolous stuff that becomes viral on social media. There is a huge amount of hate, misinformation and outright fake news as well. A genuine and worthy effort to create awareness about something that vast numbers of people struggle with is welcome.
It was really clever to use the buzz generated by the egg to send out an important message, felt a lot of people.
Social media users are generally appreciative of the fact that these powerful platforms were being used for something positive and significant.
Though we now understand more about mental illnesses and how they can ruin people's lives, people with these conditions continue to be stigmatised even today. People are still unaware about the gravity of the situation and continue to display their insensitivity and ignorance towards sufferers.
The loneliness and the desperation of those who suffer from mental illnesses, continues to be a huge problem. It prevents them from seeking the help that they need and could lead to tragedy.
Many identified with the message that the internet egg sent out. The fact is that mental illnesses can happen to anyone and can destroy lives, families and relationships if left untreated.
The talking egg has had a directly positive impact on people. The nonprofit Mental Health America reported a significant increase in the number of people coming in for screening following this social media intervention.
