Recently Paris Hilton was in the news for her toilet paper outfit. This recalled another very strange celebrity outfit to mind – the famous meat dress worn by Lady Gaga. Over the years celebrities have donned unusual outfits to make a political statement or just a fashion statement; some of these were quite memorable:
This was her choice of outfit for a wedding brunch. The socialite is famous mostly for being famous – just like the dress she wore.
Katy Perry is well known for having a fairly refined sense of crazy – as evidenced in her various Met Gala gowns: as a burger, as a chandelier etc. Last year she dressed up as a roll of toilet paper for the promo of a show – but....How did she go to the toilet in that?
It was a raw meat dress so two things seemed to be a problem here – the revolting smell of raw meat and the expectation of that smell getting progressively worse as the raw meat rots. However, the dress was meant to make a statement. Her message there was – I'm not a piece of meat.
The jumpsuit and dress worn by Blac Chyna and Amber Rose are printed with slut-shaming slurs that people typically use to criticise and shame women. The outfits were meant to counter the toxic narratives created for women seen as unconventional or bucking the trend in any way.
The former One Direction member has long been known for his androgynous dressing choices: his nailpolish, the glitter, the ‘feminine’ bags and so on. His photoshoot for Vogue with him in a dress was all about the blurring of gender roles and having fun with fashion.
Katie Price was seen in a pink wig and a pink horse outfit that was meant to mark the fifth anniversary of her KP Equestrian range – talk about stating the obvious!
This tuxedo dress designed by Christian Siriano graced the red carpet at the Oscars. This was a statement meant to question what is ‘feminine’ and ‘masculine’ in our society. This was meant to question women wearing pants can be seen as powerful while men in a dress are ridiculed or laughed at.
Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez famously wore a white dress emblazoned with the slogan Tax the Rich in bold red. Now we can imagine, say, Ranveer Singh dressing up in something unconventional or even outrageous. But, can we imagine an Indian politician making a political statement like this – particularly one that calls for taxing the rich? Very doubtful.
