When I had first watched the 1997 film Titanic I remember thinking to myself this is a proper Bollywood love story – except for the end. A priceless gem being tossed into the sea? Nooooo! That really, really upset me – something of that value could to so much good for so many, I remember thinking. Now we have another alternative to the film starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio.
In the original version, the older version of Rose is by herself at the bow of the boat and she drops the necklace with a rare blue diamond called Heart of the Ocean, into the sea. No one sees her.
… and apparently most other people as well.
In this alternative version, she does this in the presence of other characters of the film, but the senile old bat still throws away something precious as some sort of grand, romantic final gesture. I have to admit, this makes me want to tip her into the water as well.
In the original version no one gets to know that Rose had had the necklace all along and that she finally drops it into the sea. In the alternative version, at least people know. So someone could have gone down and retrieved it later. So I like the alternative version much more.
This commentator went and destroyed the hopes of all those who were hoping that the gem would be found.
Someone had this idea for a sequel to Titanic. Don’t laugh – it’s possible someone decided to make one.
It is an ad film that had then created another ‘alternative ending’.
Remember how I said this is a Bollywood film in disguise? This is why – all these plot holes occurred to me too.
Saying "The real treasure is life itself" while lobbing a priceless object into oblivion is frankly infuriating – and completely smacks of privilege that has no idea of actual life.
Old Rose has very strange hair, points out this tweet. True.
Why didn’t the guy just take the gem and tip that old bat over the edge, asked some of the tweeple. I want to know too.
The lines for that final scene are so corny, that I totally agree with that tweet.
That’s a frail old woman about to do something really, really stupid – why not gently, very gently, prevent her from doing it.
I agree! It always baffled me that the idiot woman Rose was content to let the big love of her life slowly die by hypothermia. Couldn’t they have done what this tweet says? Or at least have taken turns or something on that plank?
Someone also shared this hilarious old sketch from Saturday Night Live – which has writer-director James Cameron himself say a few words in the end of this particular ‘alternative end of Titanic’.
