If something sounds too good to be true, it usually is not true or is extremely misleading at the very least. Jio promised free data, to begin with, and free calling for life and people signed up in their droves. Jio later found that the promise was difficult to keep. Let the record reflect that Jio services have also been suspiciously eager to mine our information in return for other ‘free’ services. So when Mukesh Ambani announced a slew of very attractive sounding Jio Platform plans and products, people decided to be a little sceptical.
Google’s big investment in India will be in Reliance Industries – over 33k crores will buy the global giant a 7.7% share in Reliance.
This enables Jio to come up with products such as Jio TV Plus, Jio Glass and reportedly 5G as well.
Not just Google; other multinational companies have also made investments in Jio recently.
The show Business must go on!
These ‘mixed reality’ glasses are creating quite a buzz on the net.
They will give users access to 3D avatars, holographic content, personalised audio, video conferencing etc.
One of the offerings from Jio includes a video conferencing product called Jio Meet.
They are looking forward to using Jio’s new products and features.
#JioChat is an instant messaging application, #JioMart is an online grocery delivery service, #JioFiber claims to offer the ultimate broadband experience, #JioHealthHub is a health and fitness app.
Soon after it launched, Jio became a market leader in the telecom space; crushing the competition.
Jio’s entry in the telecom space forced other companies to lower tariffs; which users welcomed. However, in the long run, Jio’s monopoly has been detrimental for those very users.
Now with the flood of attractive-seeming products and features from Jio, the company seems set to corner even more of the market.
Market analysts have accused Jio of market manipulation via unrealistic price points, which was thought to be chiefly responsible for the current crisis in the telecom sector.
Mukesh Ambani is frequently accused of taking full advantage of the system of crony capitalism.
It is now feared that all aspects of the internet such as mapping, web searches, social networks, messaging, telecom and more will be under one brand; creating a mega monopoly.
It destroys the competition. The ultimate loser is the consumer who is at first lured by attractive products and prices but later finds there are no options or alternatives left. We wonder if #JioPlatform will be more of the same.
