Moths are not pretty. They are like the drab, unattractive cousins of the pretty butterflies that flit colourfully from flower to flower. And yet they seem to have caught the imagination of the world recently. Moth memes are everywhere and they are not exactly comforting! In fact some of the moth memes are slightly revolting – you have been warned.
This viral meme seems to stem from a certain philosophy – about how we humans seem drawn to forbidden or destructive things – like the proverbial moth to flame/light.
Perhaps some of these memes are meant to be motivational. This one for instance tells us to believe in something; anything.
Hindi film songs have long waxed eloquent about the fatal attraction of the moth (parwana) for the flame (shama). So perhaps this was a meme just waiting to happen?
The reference here is of course to Lady and the Tramp, the Disney movie featuring the two adorable dogs. The iconic image of the two canine mouths meeting over a strand of spaghetti is replaced by this one of a hideous insect and a lamp.
Apparently for a moth, the ‘pleasure room’ would be a whole different thing than humans into kinky stuff.
This one took me a while to understand. Seems to me, that the moth represents your common or garden variety of randy teen. The ‘lamp hub’ is the stand-in for pornhub and image of moths surrounding one bulb is the sort of orgiastic scene that the teen would commonly find riveting.
This particular image of a man, and two women; one of whom the man is showing an inordinate amount of interest in, lends itself beautifully to various interpretations. Replacing the man’s head with that frankly scary creature and the woman's head with the lamp…it didn’t even take much effort.
Think you know all about texting short forms? Think again. The moth memes just redefined everything you thought you knew.
Moth memes have become bizarrely popular. Some people confess to spending hours looking for and looking at them!
There are many twitter users who invite others to share moth memes with them. They evidently find these funny, or entertaining or amusing or whatever.
This person has a valid question – why indeed is this a trend at all?
It is probably just something that appeals to some people. Moth memes are certain dark and somewhat sinister. They are also meaningless. So I've decided to do what this tweet suggests: Don’t question it; just go with it… this too shall pass. When the next silly meme surfaces.
