For several years now, Lilly Singh has enjoyed worldwide fame for her hugely popular and exceedingly funny YouTube channel Superwoman, her book, her love for her pet and more. She now will be hosting her own late-night show, got congratulated by her good friend Priyanka Chopra and made a major personal announcement. So, she's been in the news – a lot!
It will be called A Little Late With Lilly Singh and will be taking over Carson Daly’s spot on NBC. She made the announcement on her YouTube channel. She goes on a bit… watch if you will.
This will be the first time that a woman of Indian origin is ever going to be hosting such a show. Carson Daly worked the show for 17 years and did about 2000 episodes! “An Indian-Canadian woman with her own late-night show? Now that is a dream come true,” she said.
Chopra, who is a good friend of Singh's messaged her with "So proud of @iisuperwomanii... First woman... of colour... to be late night show host...Break them barriers baby! So proud"
Now that she is to have her own show – which usually has a monologue bit followed by celeb interviews – people are wondering if Chopra will be among the show’s guests.
It gives us some idea about the kind of talent she has and the fame she enjoys that she made her announcement on the tremendously popular Jimmy Fallon show and that she receives good wishes from Hollywood bigwigs such as Dwayne Johnson.
Lilly Singh or Superwoman recently came out about her sexuality. She tweeted about how being female, coloured and bisexual had been obstacles; but how she now sees them as her superpowers.
The fact that Lilly Singh is of Indian origin and a woman who has now come out about her sexuality is significant for several reasons. There are few women or even men of Asian descent in public life who would be comfortable making such a revelation. This is important because it gives others the confidence to come out and be true to themselves. This makes her recent achievements, as a woman, a person of colour and LGBTQ all the more remarkable.
If you're not familiar with Lilly Singh and her Superwoman videos, here is a small sample. This one features her doing one of her Indian-parent-transplanted-abroad personas along with a typical (presumably) American/Canadian parent impression. Enjoy
