World's Most Popular Musical Cats Is Now a Movie And Twitter Hates the Trailer

I remember watching Cats a long time ago in the West End in London and being quite thrilled with the music, the spectacle, the actor ‘cats’ weaving in through the audience and startling me. The musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber, based on T. S. Eliot’s Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats is now to be a movie and the trailer is out. It stars big names like Dame Judi Dench, Taylor Swift, Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, James Corden, ballerina Francesca Hayward and others, but Twitter was not pleased with it.

Cats movie trailer

The trailer is set to the iconic, haunting Memory track. It is live-action with some digital enhancements and promises to be quite a spectacular watch – especially if one loves those songs: The Jellicle Ball, Macavity: The Mystery Cat, Mr. Mistoffelees and so many others. All the actors are kitted out in catsuits, complete with long tails and digital fur.

It went viral

The trailer started to trend on social media in no time at all and continues to attract attention and discussion, as Stephen Colbert says.

Could, should

A lot of people are upset that they decided to tamper with a classic stage production. Maybe the movie was never meant to be.

No, no, no

People (or perhaps their cats) did not like the trailer.

Terrifying

Reviewers are calling the trailer ‘terrifying’. Perhaps they are easily terrified.

Dog people

Watching the trailer, some realised why they are not cat people and are dog people instead.

“Weird as hell”

Though all the actors are fully clad, they appear strangely nude. And it’s just weird!

The tails!

People found thought the tails were very weird as well.

Some loved it

Some of those who loved the stage production are positive about the movie as well and are looking forward to more musicals being transformed into movies.

Many hated it

They hated the CGI and the digital fur tech that was supposed to make it all more believable and ended up doing the opposite.

Some…

…Were wondering how to unwatch the trailer they had just watched.

Neither cat nor human

The ‘cats’ are anatomically correct in some ways, but not in others. What some commentators called the cats’ ‘Barbie doll anatomy’ nonplussed them.

Three word review

Too many cats, says this trailer review. Well, duh!

Too small

Some also had this problem – the cats are too small.

Meanwhile, nostalgia

Everyone seems to be recalling the old tunes from the Cats musical.

More nostalgia

Some were reminded of Cat in a Hat

“I don’t care”

A lot of people are actually looking forward to the movie. I have to say, me too.
