Zoya Factor or Pal Pal Dil Ke Pass This Weekend?

I loved Anuja Chauhan’s book Zoya Factor when I read it years ago and wished for it to be made into a film. I was delighted when they did make a film out of it, and by all accounts the film lovely and light and loveable. The trailer of Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas was not really promising. That said, check out some of the reactions/reviews to both films and decide for yourself which film sounds worth your time and money:

Positive review from HT

This review speaks of the film as the quintessential love story – predictable, but sweet and refreshing. According to this review the new pair of Karan Deol and Sahher Bambba is raw but appealing and the movie does justice to the love story genre. Apparently Karan; unlike daddy Sunny, can dance!

Some viewers liked the new Deol on the block

This guy seems to like that Deol’s character first mocks the massive ego of a woman and then threatens to bury anyone who harms her. Yes, it is that sort of film apparently; and there are lots of takers for it.

No patch on father, grandfather

Obviously Karan Deol has big boots to fill; which he doesn’t quite succeed at, feel most reviewers. His dialogue delivery is poor, and it doesn’t help that this is a done-to-death formula without much of a story.

Very bad

Some reviewers have given the film the lowest possible rating and have come right out with it and called it awful. This review concludes that this Deol makes no effort at acting or he simply cannot act, while the female lead is a shade better. The dialogues are over the top, the editing sloppy and the music forgettable.

The Zoya Factor review

This movie starring Sonam Kapoor and Dulquer Salmaan has largely positive reviews as a funny and endearing film; which entertains without taking itself too seriously. It also gently mocks some of the silly superstitions that are ubiquitous in our society without getting preachy.

Universal praise for Dulquer Salmaan

Playing India’s cricket captain and Zoya's love interest Nikhil Khoda in the film, Dulquer Salmaan receives praise from practically all the reviewers. He is an effortless and intelligent actor, according to the reviews.

Paisa vasool

That it is a romcom is clear. It is also what the Indian viewer wants --- a paisa vasool film that delights, entertains and leaves us feeling nice.

Pointing this out

While calling the film very watchable, this reviewer points out the irony of a film that makes an argument against luck while it stars two star-kids who are largely the product of said luck.

What’s wrong

There were those who didn’t like the film partly because they thought it was poorly adapted from the book. This reviewer also points out that Sonam Kapoor’s deer-in-the-headlights expression seems to be ubiquitous in the film and quite tiresome after a point. The review also thinks that the cricket matches and speaking to the camera bit are badly one and the product placements tacky.

So it’s up to you to decide where you want to spend your money and eat your popcorn – watching Pal Pal Dil Ke Paas or The Zoya Factor this weekend.
