Not only is sleep a wonderful and comfortable indulgence, but it is also actually great for us! Some of us have the ability to fall asleep as soon as the head touches the pillow. Others among us envy this ability and have to find ways to fall asleep. Are you one of those who finds it difficult to fall asleep? Do you find that you're distracted by the silliest and most inconsequential of things coming awake just as you were starting to drift off?
We may know that getting to bed at a reasonable time is a good thing for health and wellbeing. We may even have read about stuff such as the body's circadian rhythms and melatonin and so on. But some of us have things to do before bed!
You just need to check your Instagram and then just a short while on Snapchat and your Reddit hasn’t had the attention it needed all day! Of course, there is that Netflix series that is just so engrossing that you cannot bring yourself to switch it off.
Things you did – and more importantly, didn’t do during the day – could keep you awake. And then there is more time spent fretting over all the things that could go wrong as a consequence; trying to think of ways to arrest the damage.
It isn't just kids that have irrational fears; adults are also perfectly capable of worrying themselves sick about the remotest and most unlikely of eventualities. Sometimes we know that our apprehensions are unrealistic, but does that stop us obsessing about them? No!
Sometimes it is the silliest of things that keep us awake – an embarrassing incident, a joke someone told in office, a riddle anything!
It could be a leaky tap – the drip, drip, drip sound can drive one mad and there no one who can repair it in the middle of the night. It could be the ticking of a clock (maybe just removing the batteries will work?) It could be the sound of a stray dog barking far away.
You think you're drifting away, but something else pops into your mind and you're fully awake yet again. And then, before you know it, it’s almost time to get up.
Poor sleep at night means waking up unrefreshed and still feeling tired. This means feeling sleepy and lethargic during the day, and low productivity ---- more thoughts to keep one up at night!
Yes, this can happen too! Sleeplessness can have a dominoes effect; one night of poor sleep leads to another and then yet another.
Various thoughts and anxieties keep us awake. And then the fact that we aren't asleep yet, makes us all the more anxious.
Some of us are positively talented in our ability to fall asleep and stay asleep. The rest envy that ability!
