Some of us are going to play Holi this year – coronavirus or no coronavirus – maaf karna, Holi hai after all. But then there is the issue of skin breakouts and rough hair at the end of it all. This is true even after an hour in the bathroom; having used shampoos and soaps of all strengths. So how can you protect your hair and skin from the onslaught of Holi colours – because miscreants are going to bring along colour that seems to be industrial strength!
This is the number one ingredient needed for a painless holi. Available in any home, coconut oil works like a charm. In the alternative, you can also use sunflower oil, castor oil or olive oil or a combination of these. Work the oil well into the skin and the hair before you set out to play. Apply two coats to all skin surfaces and the length of the hair.
If you any cuts, scrapes or open wounds make sure you cover them with a bandaid or suitable waterproof covering. You don’t want the wound to sting or to become infected /inflamed with chemical colours, dirt and all of the other things that people decide to play Holi with.
Either tie up the hair in a nice tight bun or do this: I wear one of the golliwog type wigs that suddenly appear to be sold everywhere around Holi. It looks festive and fun, plus it is great for protecting the hair. If you don’t have one already, this sort of thing is available freely online as well.
Use face cream and petroleum jelly to create a film to protect against colour. This is particularly useful to apply around the eyes, the ears and the nose area as well as the nails and the cuticles. And don’t forget to apply a liberal layer over the lips to prevent chapping and cracking from exposure to dubious colours.
The nails can get badly discoloured during Holi. So it is a good idea to apply some nail paint before heading out to play. This will strengthen and protect the nails and prevent breakage and also protect against the nails from becoming discoloured. Even a clear coat of polish will help – a tip for guys who think of nail polish as too girly for them.
I have one shirt that emerges from the closet only on Holi. It has been overlaid by many layers of colour over the years, but I've refused to get rid of it. It has a high collar and long sleeves. This I usually pair with a pair of pants or pyjamas that I've been meaning to get rid of before I venture out to play. The idea is to have as little skin uncovered as possible. So go ahead have yourself a fun Holi and use these Holi hacks to save yourself a bunch of trouble after.
