Why Are We So Afraid Of The Dark?

Dark is serene yet creepy. Most of us hide inside our bedsheets as soon as the lights are switched off. But are you really afraid of the dark or is it the fear of the unknown and supernatural creatures that make you run away at the first sign of darkness. Let us find out what is so creepy about darkness.

Separation Anxiety

As per Sigmund Feud, the fear of darkness is related to anxiety happening due to separation from closed ones. This is inculcated in children since childhood, when they have to sleep without their mothers and the lights are turned out.

Imagining things in your head

If you picture unnecessary things in your head all the time, chances are that you might imagine things like a shadow near the window, an illusionary vampire, or a non-existent animal, the moment you get into a dark zone.

Scary movie alert

Watching a horror flick alone at night, is definitely not a good idea! This would just widen up your imagination and leave you doubly scared.

A bad experience

Many of us might have had to experience trauma in the dark, and this would have scarred your memory forever.

You are suffering from Nyctophobia

It might be a genetic phobia passed on from your ancestors.

When we can't see anything

The eye is an extremely important sense organ, and its ability to see or feel anything automatically stops in the dark. This might lead to fear of darkness for some.

Body becomes more vigilant at night

The human body somehow becomes more vigilant and protective of its surroundings at night. This leads to being scared of anything that we can't see or feel, and hence sets in the obvious fear of darkness.

It's not the dark that scares us, but our own demons that fight us at night. Time for a fight back, we say!
