Recently in Mumbai, five dying patients gave a new lease of life to as many as 13 individuals who could have died because of organ failure. Cadaver donations resulted in six kidneys, two hearts and five livers giving the gift of life to 13 patients and succor to their families. On the other hand the families of the donors could take some solace from the fact that a small part of their loved ones continued to live in someone else while helping save actual lives.

Gangadhar Swain (38) sustained severe head injuries in a road accident with a truck and was declared brain dead.  His family decided to donate his heart, liver, kidneys and corneas; helping change as many as six lives!

80 year old Ramilaben Shah was brought to hospital with a cerebral bleed that did not improve. Her liver helped save a 58 year old man. The wife of police constable Nandakumar Naik was declared brain dead after brain haemorrhage. Her liver saved a 39 year old man.

Baseball Coach Tom Walter stepped forward to donate a kidney to one of his players. When Kevin Jordan’s kidney function dropped to less than 8% Walter donated his own kidney. Apparently the two play baseball together now.

Terry Roberts, a teacher donated a kidney to military man Daniel Ruckel who had suffered traumatic brain injury doing his tour of duty in Afghanistan and damaged his kidneys because of heavy pain killers. This was an organ donation that was both personal and patriotic.

 

There are numerous stories of people generously and willingly donating any organs possible while alive and many more of people pledging to donate their organs upon their death or in the event of a health condition or accident rendering them brain dead. We could all do more to increase their numbers by pledging to donate our own organs and encouraging family and friends to do the same.
