Some Indian cities have a unique problem – that of toxic foam in their water bodies. As Bangalore’s lakes routinely froth up, so does the Yamuna which flows right through Delhi. It may look pretty but the froth is a toxic result of water pollution due to untreated sewage and effluent. Recently the Delhi government had a rather unique solution for Yamuna’s toxic foam and the tweeple unreservedly expressed their sarcasm. Take a look:
On the occasion of Chhat Pooja, the faithful were seen to visit various ghats along the Yamuna to take a ceremonial dip in the water.
However it was the festival that once again focused attention on toxic foam and the scary levels of water pollution in the nation's capital.
So the authorities decided that they would spray water – on the water – to clean the water.
They thought it was an innovative idea.
Some shared reasons for the grim reality of our polluted rivers, particularly the Yamuna.
The tweeple were ready with sarcastic comments like this.
The toxic pollution of the Yamuna is a serious issue, but even a serious issue can be meme-worthy.
Same energy - pointless bandaid 'solution'.
People addressed their sarcasm to Delhi Jal Board with memes like this. Remember jal lijiye?
As citizens, it is our right, even our duty to call out those in authority when they are seen to act unwisely and wastefully.
It appears as though state government is doing something only to appear to be doing something. A lot of people including cartoonist Manjul seem to agree that spraying water seems like pointless symbolism.
Watering a plant in the rain while taking shelter under an umbrella?
We have also seen this brilliant idea of using thermocol sheets to prevent the evaporation of water.
This report explains why this is mere tokenism that will do nothing to solve a larger problem. Much of the problem originates upstream from industries in Haryana that release ammonia and other chemicals and from Delhi’s untreated municipal water.
The tweeple expressing their disdain for the government’s ineffectual efforts to clean up river pollution has given us many funny memes like these and more.
Hopefully those in decision making positions are taking note.
