There are many who deny that climate change is a reality, however, the signs of climate change are all around us. Violent weather events, extreme temperatures, storms, droughts and floods are around us for all to see. Recently we had yet more proof of climate change in the form of sudden melting of Greenland’s glacial melt. The video of a roaring froth of water under a bridge in Greenland has gone viral and reignited the vital debate on climate change.
22 degrees may be lovely weather for most of us but for Greenland, this is unusually hot. So much so, that 12 billion tons of ice melted in just 24 hours and this happened.
According to one commentator this unusual melting event occurred because of unusually heavy snowfall last autumn. According to them, the video and the accompanying figures are being quoted out of context.
Many tried to downplay the event as not unusual or unprecedented; as such nothing to worry about. Others tried to explain away the event by means of some doubtful science as well.
Some people choose to deny climate change owes itself to human activity either because of their political leanings or belief systems or because of commercial interests.
Some thought that the video was mere alarmism and that the ice melt was simply because of the arrival of summer.
Climate change is something that the scientist community is largely agreed upon. However, even among those who find that climate change is undeniable, there is a school of thought that believes that the causes don’t have anything to do with human activity.
Some researchers have warned that climate change is actually worse than we originally thought; that the glacial melt could actually be ten to 100 times faster earlier thought. The possible impact on the earth due to rising sea levels can actually be catastrophic in the extreme – and it may happen sooner than we thought.
The rate of glaciers melting, temperatures getting higher than ever before, the bleaching of coral, the dying out of so many plant and animal species --- the evidence of climate change is all around us and well documented.
Climate change manifests not only in the form of extreme cold and heat but also in the form of violent storms and wildfires.
Scientists have been warning us for decades about the way that greenhouse gas emissions are messing up the planet.
Not only does human activity cause pollution, but it also impacts health negatively and causes irreparable and irreversible changes to the earth's ecosystem and to all of its inhabitants. Some feel that it's already too late to save the earth from catastrophe.
My daughter told me the other day – it’s OK for you; you'll probably die of old age. I'm going to die from climate change. For her sake and the sake of your children – I dearly hope she is wrong.
