In the past, IPL opening ceremonies have been described as ‘tacky’ and ‘boring’ (and those are among the politer terms used). In the past people haven’t bothered to turn up for the live event in the stadium. In the past we saw performances from hired foreign performers that failed to enthrall, watched Shahid Kapoor nearly take a tumble and have had to tolerate (gasp!) Bappi Lahiri.
So how many of you actually tuned into the opening ceremony of IPL season 9 last evening? For those of you who didn’t here is a quick recap.

Katie danced to ‘Bang-Bang’ and Afgan Jalebi while Jackie danced to ‘Yaar na mile mar jawa’ and ‘Sooraj dooba’.
Chris Brown and Major Lazer performed
Who, I hear you say… I also had my Wikipedia moment there. Chris Brown is an American singer, songwriter and actor also famous for pleading guilty to felony assault of his then girlfriend Rihanna. Major Lazer is the American electronic music group who released the album Guns Don’t Kill People… Lazers Do among others. (Gulp!)
We saw Ranveer Singh dressed in cricket attire
The hottest endorser in town
He dedicated his performance to cricket fans across the world.
Yo Yo Honey Singh made an appearance
Return of the Yo Yo
Coming out after an 18 month “sabbatical” due to his struggle with bipolar disorder, Yo Yo Honey Singh gave a performance as well.
The West Indies were there too!
Champion
Most of us now know about DJ Bravo’s number Champion and how that song and the team’s dance won as many hearts in India as Brathwaite’s massive sixes. Well it was performed at the opening ceremony as well!
