Jim Carrey’s Trump Portraits – Impressive or Infuriating?

The American press has shown courage in the way that they have consistently criticized the divisive and often frankly inept politics of their President. Those in showbiz have also been similarly outspoken when calling out the racist, misogynistic statements and policies of their POTUS. Hollywood actor Jim Carrey has recently tweeted some portraits of the American president; which many hail as insightful protest art and yet again, others dismiss as disrespectful and/or motivated and/or awful.

The Russian connection

This artwork by Jim Carrey alludes to the fact that the current President of the United States is under investigation for collusion with the Russians and Russian interference with the presidential elections. The beads of sweat and the iconic Russian symbol in the rearview mirror tell their own story

Fifty shades of decay

This illustration refers to the many unsavory scandals involving the POTUS that have hit the headlines in recent times; the Stormy Daniels sex scandal being one of the latest.

Scream

Carrey feels that this is a characteristic portrait of the president; an illustration of a gluttonous, screaming, intemperate individual; a portrait that he deems to be the official portrait of the president.

Carrey’s other political art

Carrey comments on many other topics via his illustration. This one speaks of gun control, political funding by the National Rifle Association; all hot button topics right now. Marco Rubio is seen as the poster boy for those who support the NRA and oppose gun control.

Artistic response

The responses ranged from the good, to the bad, from the ugly to the artistic as well. One twitter user shared “butt art” in response.

Predictably

Some of the Tweeple felt that respect was due to the office of the president if not the person who holds the office. This view was expressed by those who genuinely believe that the office itself is above criticism and by Trump supporters unable to defend the actions of the president. ‘Jim Carrey is showing great respect for the office of POTUS, specifically by showing none whatsoever for the current officeholder,’ said a twitter user with a different view.

Oh my eyes!

…Because one cannot unsee what the eyes see! This was the response to the rather graphic illustration of the President presumably with Stormy Danienls.

Lovin’ it

A large majority of commentators expressed admiration for Carrey’s artwork as well as the trenchant political criticism it embodies.

Respect

Some wanted the art work on T-shirts, some wanted to buy signed prints of Carrey’s work and its message. Quite impressive, huh?

“Make adultery great again”

This tweet featured the famous “make America great again” red hat; albeit with a twist.

Whataboutery

Inevitably there were references to past transgressions… because the best way to respond to a difficult question is whataboutery: “making a counter-accusation or raising a different issue” when one is confronted by something that is indefensible.

Personal attacks

Also inevitable were the personal attacks directed at Jim Carrey himself; the fact that he has battled his own demons in recent times and that he has not been seen in too many films in the past few years. “Jim Carrey. A sick "has been" trying to stay relevant,” said another tweet.

This!

Not exactly polite; but who doesn’t love the Pink Floyd reference!

AND this!

Trump supporters are Obama detractors – almost by definition. Ergo, this ‘artwork’!

Profound or not?

This twitterer feels that the chaos created by the unpredictable current regime is a deliberate form of control. Paranoid or profound?

Venezuela = Pakistan?

Apparently the Americans have their own Pakistan! When in doubt, tell a person to go to Pakistan if you're an Indian who disagrees with another Indian and to Venezuela apparently if you're an American who disagrees with another American!
