Some of us treasure books and continue to feel that there is no digital substitute for the look, feel, smell and reassuring weight of an actual book. So when a man called Alex Christofi tweeted his strange idea about cutting books in half to make them more portable, there were a lot of rather extreme reactions to his idea.
Cutting books in half was his bright idea to make books ‘more portable’. He asked whether others did this as well.
Just you, buddy, said the tweeple. Many agreed that this is in fact murder. The official Twitter account of the New York Police department even decided to ‘investigate’ this ‘murder’.
Very portable and it keeps actual books safe --- so you can smell them whenever you want, suggested this Twitter user.
Many thought that this was a crime that needed investigation.
There are some things that are unforgiveable; slicing a book in half is one of them.
But what is wrong with you was the tenor of a lot of the replies.
Someone thought that there should be a restraining order preventing this person from getting close to books.
Book too bulky? Here we had nine different workable solutions to the problem.
Apparently their sister had done the book slicing thing. This commentator used book pages to make a wreath for a friend who passed away.
One response to the book murderer’s tweet was this awful idea: keeping a taco among the pages of a book as a ‘treat’.
The tweeple were disgusted to say the least. This guy even thinks Thanos was right.
What did I just see!
One bad turn deserves another --- so someone posted this hideous gift of a pizza overrun by dozens of cockroaches.
Cutting books in half is objectively a terrible thing to do. However, it is also fascinating in the same way that crimes and train wrecks are.
Emotional attachments to books aside, this commentator made a point.
In general, people were of the view that only a monster does something like this to books. The fact is that most book lovers have an emotional attachment to books that have filled them with wonder and delight; given us so many hours of joy. We reread good books, lend them to others to share thet joy and enjoy having them on our shelves. So yes I agree --- if someone slices books merely so they become more easily portable, that is just criminal.
