On His Birthday, A Look Back at Aamir Khan’s Most Iconic Looks/Roles

Here’s wishing Aamir Khan a very happy 52nd birthday – I know what you're thinking, he doesn’t look it! Currently, one of Hindi cinema’s most bankable stars, Aamir Khan has been involved in entertaining, thought provoking, heartwarming, funny, wonderfully watchable movies over the course of his acting career; beginning in 1984 with Holi (though he appeared in Yaadon ki Baraat  in 1973 and his first hit was QSQT in 1988). We look back at some of the most iconic and painstakingly created looks for some of his most memorable roles over the years:

Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak

Remember papa kehte hai? That was Aamir in his early years as chocolate box romantic hero.

Rangeela

The romantic hero showed us that he could play the tapori with the best of them!

Sarfarosh

This was among the first time we saw him as the tough guy. He played the upright, commited clean-cut cop here; and very convincingly too!

Dil Chahta Hai

Arguably, no Indian actor ever sported the soul patch more successfully than Aamir playing Aakash, with the uber cool hairstyle in one of the most iconic movies of the generation, DCH.

Rang De Basanti

Within this one movie, he displayed two very different personas: the college lay about DJ and that of Chandrashekhar Azad; as different from each other as chalk and cheese!

Mangal Pandey: The Rising

In an industry where ‘heroes’ are loath to change the parting of a famous hairstyle, Aamir grew his hair and a real, full mustache for this film.

Ghajini

The role demanded it, so Aamir Khan did it: he transformed his body into a cut, chiseled showpiece, and completely transformed his hair and his body language.

3 Idiots

He was 44 when he was asked to play the role of a college boy. So he lost some 10 kilos and altered his look yet again.

Delhi Belly

He appeared only for the song that accompanied the rolling of the credits in the end, but the hair, the humungous glasses, the flash disco clothes and the pelvic thrusting dance moves rendered him well nigh unrecognizable!

PK

The ears, the hair, the eyes, the dialect were all transformed for the movie. And then there were the utterly outlandish clothes!

Dangal

Perhaps his most dramatic transformation was his most recent. He went from fit to fat and back to superfit… All for the movie and for the sake of authenticity!
