On 31 May, we saw some welcome showers in Mumbai. Early morning on 1 June Delhi and surrounding areas saw fierce winds, lightning and rain as well. These pre monsoon showers are always welcome since they cool down the weather and help the dust settle. In fact they are more welcome than the actual monsoons, according to the tweeple.
…Pre monsoon showers to be precise.
The lowering clouds, the gusting winds and the promise of rain seems particularly delightful in Mumbai.
Elsewhere, the scenario is different.
Pre-monsoon showers are always welcome, but like most guests, they begin to be troublesome after some time.
They are heavy, destructive and bring all sorts of problems, but for a while people don’t mind.
Clothes don’t dry, everything smells musty and fungus springs up in the most unlikely places.
Trains are late, there is water logging and one cannot go out easily --- oh wait!
….Is inevitable.
Then start the social media posts of joyful selfies, pictures of steaming hot tea and pakodas, rain drenched roads….
Many in the NCR region would have woken up in the middle of the night to howling winds, lightning and driving rain. It was time for #DelhiRains to trend.
Temperatures dropped and of course the lights went out.
Uprooted trees, fallen branches and light poles are a common sight on the morning after the night before.
Something about the middle of the night storm seems to work really well for movies.
It is something that gives hope; what we desperately need in these difficult times
Rain just makes people happy.
For the marginalised, the rains only mean more problems.
While pre-monsoon showers are always welcome they do bring along problems.
#DelhiRains and #MumbaiRains are welcome.
