Rules Regarding Alternate Opening of Mumbai Shops Is Confusing People

In India we have often seen some out of the box solutions for nagging problems – remember Delhi’s odd-even solution to deal with pollution? Now in Mumbai, they proposed a similar solution to break the chain of coronavirus transmission: shops on the right would open on one day and the ones on the left would open the next day. But there was confusion:

Essential/inessential, right/left

While stores selling essentials would be permitted to be open from 7 AM to 2 PM, there would be different directions for shops selling other or non-essentials. Shops on the right side of the street would be allowed to operate on one day and those on the left would operate on the next day.

Remembering this

Like me, several people were reminded of Delhi's odd-even scheme for reducing pollution and traffic congestion.

A milestone

Mumbai had been hit badly by the second wave. This is a good sign that the city seems at least to be limping back to normalcy.

Confusion

Obviously, this type of direction resulted in confusion.

Who’s right and who’s left?

Would that not depend upon which side a person is facing at the time?

What?

What exactly are they trying to say?

People remembered this

This movie scene is about as silly as Mumbai’s vague guidelines.

No shop open?

It could also mean this, thought the tweeple.

Chaos

The vague directions meant that there was understandably a lot of chaos.

The reaction

People either did not understand or they decided based on their convenience.

Schrodinger’s shop?

This tweet makes a witty observation based on the famous Schrodinger’s cat problem used to explain quantum theory.

This suggestion

Would this not be a better bet to break the chain? This suggestion does make sense.

A random decision?

Or a well-considered decision taken after proper application of mind?

What is next?

Delhi had odd-even, Mumbai has left-right. What innovation will we see next in Chennai or Kolkata or other cities of India?
