Scientists are Delighted with the Image of the Black Hole, So Are Meme Makers

When they released the first ever image of an actual Black Hole, this was of tremendous significance for the scientific community. We look at some info about the black hole as well as the memes that inevitably followed the announcement.

Hugely significant

Such an image was hugely difficult to obtain and the “dark portrait of the event horizon (which) was obtained of the supermassive black hole in the center of the galaxy Messier 87”, is a truly a game-changing breakthrough.

The woman behind the feat

She is clearly extremely excited for what she managed to achieve. Though I understood little of what she said, her enthusiasm is infectious and I found myself cheering for her.

Lord of the Rings reference

Sauron! thought people when they saw the image of the black hole. A lot of people thought that the image looked eerily like an out of focus Eye of Sauron; especially J R Tolkien fans.

Just to be ‘clear’

Sauron – with and without prescription glasses!

Or this!

Maybe it isn’t an out-of-focus eye of Sauron, but just a regular doughnut!

Hmmm

Some were less than enthused by the hugely important astronomical discovery and thought that the photo was less than overwhelming.

Lego version

Those that didn’t think the Black Hole image was very fascinating decided to make it a little more fun.

Eerie!

Not sure whether that is a husky or a wolf but that animal looks evil!

Hi-res?

Some commentators conjectured that with technological advancement, we may see a black hole image more like the one on the right in future.

Repeated doughnut references

For some reason the picture of the black hole made numerous people think of doughnuts. Maybe they were all just hungry.

More edibles

While many were thinking doughnuts, down south they were thinking Meduwada.

This black hole

If you have an ever-hungry dog at home you know this to be true – everything disappears into that black hole too!

Aa Ha!

I have always felt that there is a black hole somewhere that mysteriously swallows up pens, pins, papers, keys, coins and all manner of small objects. Maybe this is where it all goes?

A scientific announcement everyone got behind

People are fascinated by this new development; that scientists have been able to finally capture an image of something so far away. However, as popular astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson tweets, people are very selective in the ‘science’ that they believe. They may be willing to accept proof of something literally astronomical such as black holes, but they are unable to accept that climate change is the result of human activity… simply because they don’t want to.
