It had been a fairly mild first week or so of December and perhaps it lulled us into a false sense of comfort. But then one day it rained and winter suddenly decided to make its presence felt – and then some! 17 December was bitterly cold with my phone alarm telling me that the morning temperature was a bitter 5 degrees C. obviously the tweeple had much to say about the Delhi weather; more particularly Delhi winter:
First, we had unseasonal rain in Mumbai. And then we had rain in Delhi which really changed the weather – causing temperatures across north India to plummet.
The weather was mild until just a few days back – it went from mild to frigid overnight!
Hands and feet are now cold even when sitting indoors with several layers on.
One doesn’t have to behave stupidly and sit outside to feel really, really cold.
Accompanying the cold are foggy mornings that tend to clear up as the blessed sun struggles through a little later in the day.
…Can seem like one's best friend. Leaving the warm blanket/quilt requires real will power each morning.
We’re all shivering right now.
This is the only weather in which it actually feels good to wear a mask.
Taking a bath or shower these days is fraught with peril.
Like this
Many would rather not bathe at all – it may take significant persuasion from the family to take a bath in this weather.
For some, a hot beverage and a good book are the ideal companions for a cold, cold day.
These objects emerge only during this weather.
This is perhaps the time when a hot meal of one's beloved comfort food tastes best.
At this time of bitter cold, the #FarmerProtests continue on the outskirts of Delhi. Indian citizens, staunchly nonaligned to political parties, consistently nonviolent --- these sons and daughters of the soil have gathered in huge numbers. They want to be heard – we wonder whether the government will lend an ear now – in this bitterly cold Delhi winter.
