Another day another storm in a teacup… in other words another day for in the life of the Twitter troll. For many, getting a hashtag to trend is to gain some amount of fame and validation. It is a way to come out of the shadows of obscurity to take one's place in the social media limelight, albeit for a few minutes or days. So now, an animation film featuring Superman and Wonder Woman is anti-India. Why? Because they destroy weapons and declare ‘disputed’ Kashmir an arms-free zone. And a popular TV channel reporting on this ‘news’ used a Marvel image for the story. Here’s what happened
The context isn't clear, but this short clip has enraged people: animated Superman and Wonder Woman appear to superheoing or whatever their job description is. The voiceover talks about some fictitious country and then about making ‘disputed’ Kashmir an arms-free zone. Then Superman appears to have sat a couple of guys down and brokered some kind of peace --- in a distinctly threatening matter.
They were angry that Kashmir was called a disputed territory. Fine so far. But they were also angry that it was made an arms free zone. So peace is anti-Indian?
Some felt that the movie is just ignorant about the situation on the ground; that the filmmakers are unaware of the risks that security forces take each day in the area. This is a fair point.
Well I kind of agree because I'm also more of a Marvel fan. I think all DC supers take themselves altogether too seriously.
Our men and women in uniform constantly protect our country and our borders at great risk to themselves. Yes, they are our super-people. This tweet doesn’t want ‘fake Superman’. Fair enough.
This tweet feels the need to state the obvious – that Kashmir is a part of India.
For some reason, some of the tweeple wanted to make the point that a beloved deity is stronger than a fictitious animated comic character. I can’t even…
…Because his suit has a hole in it? I'm confused.
...For DC comics.
A well-known TV anchor ran with the #AntiIndiaSuperman story but forgot to do the most basic research; putting up a Marvel poster for DC characters.
This Twitter handle creates a hilarious meme of Indian supermen of the past. It also mocks the ridiculousness of taking offence at the most irrelevant things and blaming past regimes for everything that is currently wrong with our country.
Is this offensive, asks this tweet.
The US has interfered in the internal matters of Vietnam, Korea, Iraq, Afghanistan… the list is long… and left those countries worse off. Except #AntiIndiaSuperman seems to be about a cartoon character… from a comic. Are we really wasting our time on this?
