Remember that old Bee Gees song, one of the most irresistible dance tracks of all time, Stayin‘ Alive? That song is about doing whatever is necessary to stay alive in the tough city of New York. Now with the demise 2020, arguably one of the worst – or most hated at any rate – years of recent history, people have a similar plan for 2021. The plan is to just stay alive.
The streets were quiet and largely deserted on a night when they are usually buzzing with festive activity.
…Only on social media. People were wishing each other on social media rather than in person.
Even those who didn’t keep in touch all year.
They were tired of seeing the same sort of messages again and again.
If someone bothers to wish you, the least you can do is reply with a ‘same to you’.
2020 was a bizarre year by any measure and we realised the importance of just staying alive – and learned not to take life for granted. People were reminded of the old Bee Gees song.
Many live with mental health issues. some took time to remind them about all the reasons to stay alive.
Scarred by 2020, people are unwilling to be optimistic about the New Year.
Many suspect that the year to come will be worse than the year that just ended.
There was a sense of achievement in merely surviving this past year.
Preparing for new battles in the New Year!
This
New Year celebrations have been muted.
However some of those resolutions were short-lived.
Some had really simple New Year resolutions – just to stay alive.
2020 was a year dominated by mask wearing (and the politics of mask wearing), PPE kits and hand sanitisers. Many of us hope to see – and use – less of these in times to come.
Just as some were hoping for some respite a new COVID19 strain has emerged.
We survived 2020. Surely we’ll survive 2021 – lets all just aim on stayin alive.
