Twinkle Twinkle Goes the Google Mask Song & It’s Cute

Who would have thought when we were eagerly wishing each other happy year at the stroke of midnight; what a downer 2020 would turn out to be! A worldwide pandemic, lockdowns, travel bans and a general pause on life as we know it… We even have a new lexicon with words such as covidiots and quarantini becoming common parlance. It is amazing that we have a huge number of anti-maskers who believe that wearing a mask is a dark plot to impinge on their liberties rather than good sense and simple good manners.

So Google made a song

The mask song is a simple one set to the tune of Twinkle Twinkle. A simple song – to appeal to the simplest of minds – a simple way to stay safe and to keep others safe.

Cute!

Many of the tweeple liked the song. They thought it was catchy and easy; a Covid-19 anthem of sorts.

Another version

There is another version of the mask song. To be sure when I asked Google Assistant to sing me the mask song, I heard the Twinkle Twinkle version – albeit in a proper Indian accent in my case!

Along came the anti-masker

There are many who will go to elaborate lengths to explain why they don’t wear masks and why mask-wearing is actually counterproductive. Mask wearing has assumed a political colour now; ergo this tweet.

Like this

Many who decry mask wearing; who believe that a wearing a mask is uncomfortable, suffocating or harmful, tend to have some other strongly held beliefs as well.

However…

They don’t insist upon doctors conducting surgical procedures without masks, however.

The pee example

This rather crude explanation is often given to anti-maskers to explain – in idiot-proof terms – how and why mask-wearing makes sense.

Some were like…

I’m just here for the comments. Because something as seemingly inconsequential as wearing a mask seems to trigger the fiercest possible responses. And let’s face it a Twitter fight is, at its best, positively gladiatorial!

Meanwhile, Karens

Karen is the generic meme name for all those privileged, entitled (not just) women who feel that the world somehow owes them and that they can behave as badly as they want.

The irony

There is a certain irony in the need to use the simplest of kids’ songs to remind adults to behave responsibly. Hopefully, the Google mask song will help send the message – about a simple and effective way to maintain public wellness - which is surprisingly difficult for some to grasp.
