Remember when Congress' accounts were hacked recently? It was done by a group calling themselves Legion, possibly based on the hacker group which operated under the name of Legions of Doom in the 80's and 90's. Now a few weeks back when they hacked Congress accounts, they gave them serious indigestion and hundreds of accounts were deleted by the party members. The latest act by Legion is to go after Vijay Mallya!
So what does this group want to do, exactly? Simply put they claim to be the digital Robin Hoods. They are openly challenging people who have a lot to hide that they will expose all their secrets. They are even challenging the law to catch them.
They made it very clear that they don't perform any impromptu releases. They have clear stated that they infiltrated Congress accounts for months before their expose. And they started with Mallya's address and phone number in the UK, urging people to call the man.
Considering that Vijay Mallya literally fled the country after bowworing Rs. 9000 Cr of the tax payers money from various national banks, and just said that he won't pay it back, the common man wants to see some action against him. Rumours of his loans being written off after demonitisation just enraged the common man even more. So Legion used this to successfully pique the interest of the people by announcing that they will be releasing his account information shortly.
Like the legendary Robin Hood who always followed through on his promise to rob the rich to help the poor, Legion followed through on their promise of releasing some financial information about Vijay Mallya personal assets, investments and liquidity. They even provided a peek at his settlement documents for the UK. They uploaded a whole file dump and urged users to dowmload the entire file.
Unbelievably, they had not only gained access to Vijay Mallya's passwords but they actually went ahead and shared them with the whole wide world. Can you imagine?
And of course towards the end of it all, Vijay Mallya comes on record to claim that he is being blackmailed by an 'outfit' named Legion. He called it a 'joke', but the tome of his tweets didn't sound like he was laughing.
While Vijay Mallya needs to be brought back to stand trial, this is definitely not the right way to go about getting justice. Breaching the privacy of any citizen in the world is a violation of their rights and could potentially endanger any legal actions taken against Mallya in the future. We're sure his lawyers are working overtime to make inadmissable in court, all documents released by the hackers. Legion may want to rethink their strategy to assist the law.
