If recent reports are any indication, India’s most famous absconder and proponent of living life king size, Vijay Mallya (or Dr Vijay Mallya as some may remind us) seems to be getting some of the comeuppance that he deserves. We look at what he did, why entire consortiums of Indian banks are after him and why there is an extradition process on. We also look at what he is doing in England – where people are booing him and chanting ‘Chor-Chor’ at cricket matches.
Vijay Mallya directly and indirectly owes financial institutions about Rs 9000 crores. He evaded at least three court summons and then managed to mysteriously flee the country leaving his creditors high and dry. While he is far from the only or even the biggest defaulter, he is certainly the most famous and most reviled.
Well does it surprise you Mr. Mallya? You continue your much publicized king size life… in India and abroad, while salaries of former employees of your company remain unpaid? You failed to show good faith; even failed to show a shred of regret or remorse so what happened next ought not to have surprised you.
That he is considered a fugitive by Indian authorities did not prevent Mallya from attending a cricket match in England. At the India – South Africa match at the Oval in London, he was greeted with heckling, hooting and chants of “Chor Chor”.
There is an ongoing extradition proceeding against him initiated by India, so he can be tried at home. Mallya appeared before a UK court in the matter. He had these words of wisdom for reporters waiting outside. He said he would not answer any of their questions; he was upset that the “Chor-Chor” incident got so much publicity in the media.
