What’s Up This Weekend? Movie Releases That Will Interest You

So this weekend, rather than big ticket premiers, we have an interesting mix of movie releases that may interest you as you head to the multiplex. Your options are between India’s first “war at sea” film The Ghazi Attack, the thriller Irada and rom-com Running Shadi this weekend. Of course you can also take in recent hits, Raees or Kaabil or even Dangal if you haven’t viewed these already.

The Ghazi Attack

The Ghazi Attack starring Kay Kay Menon, Rana Daggubati, Taapsee Pannu, Atul Kulkarni, claims to be a work of fiction based on true historical occurrences. Set during the 1971 Indo-Pak war, this film is about a covert operation that no one knew about; the result of which is still in dispute. The Pak sub PNS Ghazi was sunk by Indian forces. This one is all about nationalism and reviews rate the film between middling and fairly good. The film also juxtaposes a rebel officer and with another who, is the practical one as well as a Bangladeshi refugee or two according to reviews. A promising view this weekend, if you're looking for some rousing nationalistic viewing.

Irada

Starring Naseeruddin Shah, Arshad Warsi, Divya Dutta and Sagarika Ghatge, Irada is a film about a mysterious bomb blast being investigated by a NIA officer, an ex army man looking to avenge the death of his daughter and a journalist looking to nail those who killed her boyfriend. Billed as an eco-thriller, the reviews of the film have praised performances from the lead actors, but have offered some criticism on aspects such as writing and execution. Go for it; just don’t go expecting Ishqiya or Dedh Ishqiya reprisals just because of the lead actors.

Running Shaadi

This is another one of a series of movies we have seen in recent times – set in small towns, with ordinary, relatable, likeable people; these are funny, enjoyable, slice of life movies that feature an ensemble cast of competent actors rather than stars. So here we see Amit Sadh, Taapsee Pannu (clearly she is having a good week with two releases together!), Arsh Bajwa, Brijendra Kala and others in story where a couple of youngsters come up with a (not so) bright idea – a matrimonial service that helps couples elope and get married. Then of course love happens and there are laughs along the way… the movie has garnered between one and three star reviews.
