Lilly Singh is a YouTube sensation. Her series of videos via her channel Superwoman takes a funny and irreverent look at some common stereotypes about women and men, relationships, about desi parents and their non-desi counterparts and other fun stuff. So there are many reasons Lilly Singh is famous including the fact that she recently wrote a book and Smriti Irani, Uniion Cabinet Minister recently tweeted about her.

Lilly Singh frequently plays her own ‘parents’ who are of Indian extraction. Though she was born in Canada, her Indian roots and Punjabi culture are frequently the subject matter of her videos.
Lilly Singh’s YouTube channel is called Superwoman. The BBC recently spoke about her success; how she went from making videos about “tying turbans to global stardom”. She has collaborated with the Rock, Selena Gomez, James Franco and Seth Rogan.
Her channel has over 11 million subscribers and her videos routinely have millions of views each. She has had tea with Michelle Obama and has also been on the Jimmy Fallon show and the Trevor Noah show. As she said on the interview, it was depression that started her off. The first video she uploaded on YouTube made her happy and she went on from there.
She not only makes serious money (about $2.5 million last year, her own movie and a world tour) she is also a digital content powerhouse. In 2015 Lilly Singh was on the Forbes list of highest paid YouTube stars.
In March she wrote a book titled How To Be a Bawse: A Guide to Conquering Life. While serious critics have been less than enthused about the book, user reviews are generally excellent; the book being described as a ‘must have’ and one that can be read and reread.
Union Minister Smriti Irani tweeted about the book and tagged Lilly Singh in her tweet. The tweet went viral and there you have it, Lilly Singh is a bona fide, international star who is known even in our stodgy political circles!
