Soon after unruly crowds stormed the US Capitol, the US former president Donald Trump had been de-platformed from most of social media. He was permanently banned by Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, Snapchat, Pinterest, Discord and even Amazon for spreading fake news and inciting violence. On 3 June, it was rumoured that Trump’s social media accounts were being reinstated. As a result of this #DeleteFacebook and ‘Facebook and Instagram’ started to trend.
Some decided to go off Facebook. Others trended the hashtag (but forgot about the mirror).
#DeleteFacebook and ‘Facebook and Instagram’ were trending and people wondered why.
Why? Well there are plenty of reasons – regaining one’s sanity is one.
Mostly though, the trend had to do with the supposed return of the Donald.
Facebook is a multibillion-dollar company because of us, the users; because it profited and continues off our personal information and our manipulation.
People were trending 'Delete Facebook' on Instagram
Many Instagrammers don’t care about Facebook because they think Facebook is for boomers.
Deleting one and using the other is a little silly because both are owned by the same guy!
Mack Zuckerberg owns WhatsApp too, in case people had forgotten that.
People were telling and reminding each other of this and the fact that if they were going to delete one, they should delete the others as well.
The ex-President’s profile is still on Facebook, with the last entry made on 7 January.
Though the account has suspended and he cannot post, people can still see, comment on, like and share his posts.
A lot of people think that Zuckerberg-owned companies are exploitative and manipulative if not outright criminal.
