Remember how in the 1990s, Govinda used to be famous for his breathtaking (not in a good way) outfits? And despite how outlandish those outfits were, he seemed to be able to carry them off? Remember his frenetic energy levels and how his antics jumped off the screen at you? No? We'll remind you. Read on. Now in 2017, one actor seems able to match that level of crazy and that energy; Ranveer Singh. Here is why Ranveer Singh is and isn't a present day Govinda.
He defined “over the top” at the time. And it didn’t matter – the outfits suited his effervescent personality and the roles that he did.
He has a penchant for loud prints, deafening colours, completely out there designs… some call it crazy, some call it guts. The question however begs to be asked: who makes clothes like this??
What were you thinking? To Juhi Chawla in this instance… because of these utterly inexplicable outfits.
There you have Ranveer Singh paying tribute to Govinda!
His songs were insanely catchy: remember sarkailo khatiya, teri nani mari toh main kya karoon, ek chumma tu mujhko udhaar dai de, what is mobile number, makhna, or this can’t-get-it-out-of-my-head song… kisi disco mein jaayen? Don't miss the leather pants and eye-popping shirt Govinda is wearing in the song.
Tattad Tattad from Goliyon ki Rasleela-Ram-Leela – also known as the dandruff song and the frenetically high energy Malhari from Bajirao Mastani, are songs where we see Ranveer Singh’s high octane moves, vitality and vigour. However, in terms of sheer crazy, he has a long way to go before he can match up to Govinda’s extreme level. When Ranveer Singh does a Meri Pant Bhi Sexy (Dulaara) of his own; then we can talk again.
One of the most famous set of 6 (or is it eight? Is this anatomically possible?) pack abs in the Indian film industry belongs to the irrepressible Ranveer Singh. If he wears the most unhinged of outfits; he is as eager to shed his shirt.
Govinda was wildly popular for many reasons; just not for his amazing abs.
Having done most of his roles as he did in pre-Twitter days, Govinda was oblivious or less aware of the less than positive feedback he was generating. Ranveer Singh has to be an altogether better sport. Every public appearance in (ahem!) unusual clothing means that Ranveer is compared to an iPhone, air stewardess and other far less flattering things.
