Wordle, Worldle, Numdle – Why Are People Obsessed? Why Won’t It Stop Trending?

I cannot recall anything like this since the Angry Birds phenomenon. For weeks now, the five-letter word game Wordle has been huge on social media, with people showing off sharing their scores/ solutions. Daily Wordle solutions in encrypted form also found their way onto social media, allowing people to tell others that they had ‘done it’ for the day. And now there are new versions: Worldle for geography nerds – and Numdle for people who like numbers.

At first

It was like this

Then

It was taking over the timeline – we saw boast posts about Wordle everywhere

Simply everywhere!

It seems to be taking up a lot of mind space; so that people are seeing that grid pattern offline as well

There are Wordle memes

Of course there are memes.

Sharing…

…Is a big part of the experience.

Like this

Some of the more difficult ones seem to attract more interest.

People are invested

They badly want to solve the puzzles

It is rewarding

Finishing the puzzle gives that sense of achievement – probably why so many seem obsessed with it

People love it

Or maybe not?

It is addictive

Word puzzles are interesting and addictive – I have a daily tryst with Scrabble, Word Stacks and Word Trip so I would know – but this one really seems to have caught on.

People look forward to it

Players look forward to the next one – yes there is only one a day, each with its serial number.

Some find it difficult

I haven’t played it yet, so I cannot comment

Perhaps this?

Maybe I won’t be able to solve the puzzle and feel stupid? Maybe that’s why I don’t play it?

It is frustrating

Not getting it is frustrating.

Getting harder?

Some believe so

Now there is Worldle

It is a game for those with an affinity for geography.

There is also Numdle

It is like Wordle for people who like numbers.

Because why not!
