Perhaps in primitive times, there were enough thrills, spills and chills to keep adventure-seekers happy. There were predators to escape, food to fight for and the elements to battle with – lots of adrenaline! Now, however, we live safe and lamentably non-dangerous lives. So, the thrill-seekers among us have to manufacture those adrenaline-inducing moments. Ergo we find some very inventive and extreme adventure sport these days.
Those women don’t seem too keen, to begin with. There is a safety cord they are attached to, but it’s a really, really long way down. Then there is a guy with some buckets and another one in a very strange bear suit. Many variations there for the thrill seeker.
It is exactly as it sounds: sliding down the side of a volcano on a board of some sort. Those people can be seen climbing all the way up with their boards and then sliding down the side of, yes a volcano. As you can see, quite a few fall off, presumably with some very uncomfortable and painful results – but in the end they all look quite exultant and chipper.
I don’t know what is scarier – the fact that those must be freezing cold temperatures of water or the fact that people are diving into narrow, dark tunnels full of water. Perhaps this is exciting and fascinating for some – for me, something like this is utterly claustrophobic, oppressive and terrifying.
I simply love the beach and can literally spend days simple vegetating on a beach somewhere so long as there are reasonably few people around. But the concept of kite surfing seems to me like a great beach vacation ruined. It looks exhilarating and exciting and all – but just look at those beaches -- they are stunning! Why kite surf when you can do --- absolutely nothing!
Now there are several grades of white water rafting depending upon the rapidity of the water and how difficult a particular route is. While I'm sure mild rapids would be enjoyable and memorable, I don’t enjoy endangering my life and limb. Clearly many others do, I wish them joy of it.
That is clearly a very terrified, but extremely excited woman who is about to do some bungee jumping --- with a difference. You don’t just jump off, you are strapped into a chair and then pushed off – and you fall a very, very long way attached to the bungee cord, which is essentially a very strong rubber band. This isn't as scary or as dangerous as some of the other extreme adventures above, but I think I’ll pass on this one as well. There are many of course, who enjoy coming face to face with their own mortality - me, I'll settle for the 'adventure' of a really good meal.
