While everyone is going nuts celebrating the historic, first ever test series win by an Indian team in Australia, there have been reasons to celebrate other sports as well. If Cheteshwar Pujara, Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant and the others regaled us with their cricketing feats, Sunil Chhetri, Anirudh Thapa, and Jeje Lalpekhlua did the same with their footballing talents. 2019 seems to have begun well for Indian sports.
India won the cricket test series in Australia 2-1. This is the first time this has happened. Also remarkable was India’s performance in football.
The Indian team defeated the Thailand team 4-1; its best performance in the event in 55 years. This helps cement India’s position at the top of Group A in the AFC Asian Cup 2019.
You probably saw this video on WhatsApp already: the happy celebration of the series win with fans to the tune of yeh mera dil and mere desh ki dharti.
Skipper Sunil Chhetri became the highest scoring Indian player in the Asia Cup. It is highly significant that #SunilChhetri overtook #LionelMessi by gaining the distinction of becoming second-highest international goals among active players.
Cheteshwar Purjara’s consistently strong and reliable performance in this series has been a large contributor to India’s win down under. He has not only scored big runs, but has steadied the innings, motivating other batsmen.
Sunil Chhetri had this message for fans. He thanked fans for their support and asked for their continued encouragement and support.
The Indian players have been strong and consistent throughout this Australian test series. The men who contributed to the win have showed their talent and class consistently throughout the series; proud to be a part of this winning unit.
Others would disagree, but for coach Ravi Shastri, this was a win bigger than the World Cup win of 1983.
Indian skipper Virat Kohli also caught the eye for his pink gloves and bat. This was to show his support to the McGrath foundation which works for creating awareness about breast cancer and to help those with breast cancer.
K L Rahul and Hardik Pandya were on the Coffee with Karan show when they made the fatal mistake of saying that they rated Virat Kohli above Sachin Tendulkar as a batsman. Predictably, all hell broke loose on Twitter….
