Day one at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics saw a big win for India with weightlifter Mirabai Chanu winning a silver medal for the country. We also saw other women powering ahead in their respective disciplines: P V Sindhu in badminton, Mary Kom in boxing and Manika Batra in table tennis. Here’s what happened with India at the Olympics:
Saikhom Mirabai Chanu clinched a silver medal for India on the first day of the 2020 Olympics – which is of course being held now in 2021. After being disappointed in Rio five years ago, she has finally made her mark
Celebs and other social media users congratulated silver medalist. Of course politicians were quick to also congratulate while taking political mileage of some or other sort from the event.
She hadn’t had pizza for a long time and she said she would make up for lost time. Weight lifters have very severe diet restrictions to maintain fitness and to keep within their respective weight categories.
Prompt came this announcement from Dominos: free pizza for life for the medal winner. The pizza chain’s Imphal team went over to the family home of Mirabai Chanu with some pizza and for some photo ops.
It was a good Sunday for Indian women athletes. Former Olympic silver medalist P V Sidhu won her opening match against her Israeli counterpart.
Sindhu beat her opponent in straight games. The world champion keeps alive India’s further medal hopes.
The women’s singles table tennis event saw Manika Batra winning the first round.
She beat Ukraine's Margaryta Pesotska to move into the third round and will now take on World No. 16 Sofia Polcanova for a place in pre-quarterfinal.
Six-time world champion Mary Kom showed that she still has what it takes at 38! She beat her opponent to advance in her flyweight weight category.
In table tennis, Sharath Kamal won men’s singles round 2, 4-2 against Tiago Apoloniaon day three of the Olympics
India has never participated in fencing but Bhavani Devi participated and won the first round of the women’s sabre individual Olympic event. Though she lost to the world number three in the subsequent round, hers is a significant achievement in a sport that few Indians even know about.
