Unless you’ve been completely off the grid, you know that Indian boxer Mary Kom recently won her 6th world boxing championship title. But she has other claims to fame as well. Did you know for instance that she is a reasonably competent singer?
Mary Kom won the gold medal for the 6th time at World Boxing Championships held at Delhi. She defeated Ukrainian Hanna Okhata in the 48kg light flyweight class.
This title makes her the most successful boxer in the history of this tournament. She now equals the record of Felix Savon of Cuba for the number of times she has won the tournament. She won her first gold 16 years ago and now at the age of 35 she won her sixth title.
Mary Kom has had to compete in a higher weight category in the Olympics. Though she otherwise competes in the 48 kg category, the Olympics doesn’t have this category at all and she has to compete in the 51 kg category there. In spite of this, she won the individual bronze at the 2012 Olympics. Now having automatically qualified for the 2020 Olympic event, she hopes to bring home that elusive Olympic gold medal.
Mary Kom married K O Kom four years after the two met and the two now have twin boys (born in 2007) and third son (born in 2013). She has continued to compete at the highest level after her kids were born
She started out this competition with a huge amount of pressure on her after winning the gold medal at the commonwealth games. With all the buzz and with the audience chanting her name she felt emotionally overwhelmed; breaking down and crying after her win.
Is there anything she cannot do! While her lyrics may be a little dodgy, she has a pleasant singing voice and a reasonable grasp of pitch and tempo. Here is wishing her many more laurels and many more happy singing sessions!
