'3 Idiots' starring Aamir Khan was one of the most loved movie of all time. But, did you know that it's character Phungshuk Wangroo was actually inspired from a real life person?
That person is Sonam Wangchuk from Leh, who recently gained wide recognition by winning the prestigious Rolex Awards for Enterprise 2016.
He has been working in Ladakh for over 20 years and is the Founding Director of the Students’ Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh. He has designed its campus in such a way that it runs completely on solar energy and no fossil fuels can be used for cooking, lighting or heating, even in the coldest conditions.
He has won this award for his project called the Ice Stupas, which are basically artificial glaciers which can fulfill the requirement of water for agriculture in the dry dessert. This is a great problem solving technique by which the farmers of Ladakh can overcome water shortage issues.
He has battled with many odd situations to get to being a globally acclaimed innovator in his life. He has worked for many years for the better life of the mountain people. He wants them to be educated, so that they can solve their own problems by using the technology.
