Pinga, the Official Video Song from the upcoming Sanjay Leela Bhansali film Bajirao Mastani starring Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra and Ranveer Singh was released recently. This is something that wouldn’t have created even a flutter of interest in non-NRI segments of the United States and netizens the world over.
However there is a certain amount of gushing praise for and an avid interest in all that Priyanka Chopra does and says these days. This is because PC has successfully created an international persona for herself that transcends her Indian origins and skillfully takes advantage of her American connection(s).
PC’s Persona
If there is a female equivalent of the Badshah of Bollywood, Shah Rukh Khan, it would have to be Priyanka Chopra – not just talented and accomplished, but intelligent, articulate and very, very savvy, making all the right career choices (for the most part). Like the Khan, Chopra has the ability to connect to her audiences effortlessly, has great natural charm and has been able to very successfully engineer her stunning personal success.
She has a modest singing talent which has not been permitted to go unnoticed; in fact she has made the best of her musical abilities. She has sung some of her own songs in her movies and her collaboration with American rapper Pitbull quickly catapulted her to international fame.
Her column with the Hindustan Times, contributions to international publications such as the Guardian and the New York Times and now monthly contributions to Elle magazine as well as her regular tweets help her connect to an ever wider audience. These are the things that help cement her position as a global citizen not just an international star.
PC and the American connection
She lived with an aunt in the United States for several years when she was a teenager (so if she rolls her R’s a little bit, there is probably just cause). And then of course Qauntico happened. The hit American drama series has catapulted her to international fame and suddenly the west has woken up to a new international star on the firmament. So avid is the interest in her that her Indian projects are also attracting interest now. So international audiences are now waiting for the “lavish historical musical” slated for a December release; meanwhile Pinga is being heard on loop all over the world.
