People all over the world have grown up with Abba songs such as Fernando, Chiquitita, Waterloo, Mamma Mia, Dancing Queen, Voulez Vous, SOS, Thank You for the Music, Winner Takes it All and so many more. The Swedish quartet of talented musicians with the beautiful voices embodied the best of pop music: lovely tones, catchy beats, strong, pitch perfect vocals and identifiable lyrics that spoke of relationships, aspirations or told moving stories. If Abba is indeed to reband, everyone is celebrating!
The band formed in 1972 and the name ABBA was derived from the first letters of the names of each of the band members: Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Anni-Frid Lyngstad. Between 1974 and 1982, their music topped charts all over the world.
Though Abba’s members never actually announced that they were disbanding, they never performed together or made any more albums after December 1982 and some of the band members later started their own solo careers as well.
After the unofficial dissolution of the band, Andersson and Ulavaeus got involved in a musical stage production called Chess. The highly acclaimed production received rave reviews for its political theme as well as its musical score. Enjoy this portion of Chess in Concert with its stunning vocals and lovely arrangements.
In 2016, the four members of Abba made a public appearance together. It was at a private party Stockholm to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Andersson and Ulvaeus' first meeting. Agnetha and Anni-Frid women performed the ABBA song The Way Old Friends Do and Andersson and Ulvaeus joined them on stage.
In October 2016, manager Simon Fuller announced that the band would reunite for a unique digital entertainment project based on the band’s tours. This would be a lifelike hologram form project that will launch in 2019.
The band members made more public appearances recently and also announced the release of new songs later this year. A new song entitled I still have faith in you and one more are reportedly in the pipeline and may be released in December 2018 according to reports.
Benny said this to the BBC News. "I don't feel we have to think about, 'Oh, what if it was better before?'” Perhaps it was better, but really all we can say is thank you for the music!
I leave you with one of my all time favourite Abba numbers, Slipping through my Fingers - this is a song that I relate to at so many levels – a beautiful melody, brilliant voices and lyrics that speak about a mother’s chagrin at children growing and the desire to hold on to precious minutes together. Enjoy! While we await more of Abba in times to come.
