Why Has This Amrita Rao Scene from Vivah Been Trending

Remember that ultra-sanskaari, supremely sanitised film starring Amrita Rao and Sahid Kapoor – Vivah? This was a Sooraj Bharjatya film and therefore by definition was a story about a bunch of people playing ‘traditional’ happy families. Typically in a Bharjatya film, we have little conflict, lots of duty and much sacrifice in the name of ‘love’. One scene from the film, in particular, has gone viral recently – the dutiful girl is so sanskari that she offers ‘jal’ rather than ‘pani’. Take a look at the tweets, the scene and Amrita Rao’s reply.

Jal lijiye scene from Vivah

A little after the 8 mt mark, she offers water – all demure and dutiful.

It caught on

Have some water – you must be tired. This applies in a lot of situations.

Or juice

Fed up of water? Have juice.

No thanks

Some wanted coffee.

Or beer

When nothing but a Heineken will do.

Made for memes

The movie released in 2006 but that is irrelevant to when and what goes viral.

Anything can go viral

Remember ‘hello frands, chai pee lo’? Was there any reason for that to go viral? Or gormint aunty, come to that?

Old fave

People who liked the film watched it again.

Sparking interest

Some of those who hadn’t thought of watching it.

The brand bandwagon

Every time there is a viral trend there are brands that decide to jump on.

Offering stuff

A lot! Born to serve?

Meanwhile

Progressive women find the submissive, obedient woman trope in popular culture simply helps bolster the patriarchy.

Problematic

He can do what he wants – because apparently he has the right. Consent? Who dat?

Tired?

Some were tired of the #jallijiyememes.

Amrita Rao put out this tweet

The actor hasn’t seen for a while – she posted this video on social media to reply to the #Vivah memes and the #jallijiyememes
